Taking on staff
Hiring adds paperwork twice. The first employee adds a policy and a certificate people ask for. Growing adds a registration nobody asks for, which you notice only because it is one more thing with a renewal date on it.
What gets added
- Workers compensation — a policy, and a certificate of currency for it that clients and portals ask to see.
- A payroll tax registration — once the wage bill is large enough for one.
- Your existing certificates — which now describe a business with more people in it.
What nobody asks you for
A payroll tax registration is the odd one out here — no client asks to see it, and no portal wants a copy. A revenue office notices, or does not. The threshold is a wages figure rather than a headcount, so two businesses with the same number of people can sit on opposite sides of it, and working out which side you are on is a question for your accountant rather than for us.
What we do about it
We hold the workers compensation certificate with everything else, and once a payroll tax registration exists we hold that too — it is one more registration with a date on it.
The next request asks for a different set of the same documents, and the ones you already sent have expired.
We’re in a closed alpha, and we write every invitation ourselves.
